Sometime after I’d found and photographed Rynagh the first time, she recalled to me a story of a trip to the library where she came across a book by Ari Seth Cohen called Advanced Style. As she explained it, the book was about the style of elderly women, the women were fabulous, and the fact that a book like this existed at all was fabulous. Within the next week or so I’d come to learn that not only was Advance Style a book, but it was also an enormously successful blog as well. I thought the concept was ingenius.
During Fashion Week in New York this past September, I had the pleasure of being introduced to Ari by our mutual friend Brandon from Humans of New York at Lincoln Center. Ari was in a naughty good mood–he’d invited some of his favourite girls along for the day. “We’re about to crash Fashion Week,” he whispered to me on the sly. About 30 minutes later I find him clearing space for an impromptu fashion show. They’d brought music! And one by one, these (I don’t know how to describe them… brilliant? extraordinary?) women strut down the path in their incredible garments as if it was obvious that they invented the walk. I’d taken these photos and wanted to post them the same week, but I soon got swallowed up by the monster that is the Fashion Week schedule, and soon-after I was jetsetting. There’s really no excuse for me posting these photos so late other than to say, with New York Fashion Week on the horizon in a couple of days, now seems fairly appropriate.
