New Years Eve, 31 December.
Stanton Street, New York.
I like parties, but increasingly find myself skipping more than I attend. The reason: I’m a closet introvert. I tend to do well in situations were casual conversations are not necessary (for example, dances), although things change dramatically when I have camera my hand. When photographing parties, I try to be as spontaneous as possible. The setting, the people, the overall mood will always determine these things. It usually takes a while for partygoers to get used to me if they don’t know my style–I’m not big on that “stop! pose! cheese!” business; but you guys already know that ;). The flat where this New Year’s Eve party was held was quite large, but the common spaces were deceptively narrow, my perception become almost tunnel-visioned. I did not convert from colour in post; I made the decision early on in the evening to shoot exclusively in black and white.
