Here’s Part Two – Outside Alexander Wang Spring 2014. For Part One, click here.
There were a lot of notable people on hand to see the spring collection, among them were names like Solange, Terry Richardson and Kanye West. Quick tangent: As it happened, I was standing right next to Kanye’s car when he was whisked out of the back door by security. There were a myriad of photographers parked to the opposite end of the lot; I imagine everyone thought he would enter the back seat from that end, only security must have gone through and done a space sweep before I got there, because there was some discernable distance between the lot of them and the car. I stood on the blind side of the car because there was no other space (my thinking: I have long arms, I could always hope for an aerial shot). Kanye stepped out–only he must have known that the photographers would be there because he immediately turned away from them. With my 85mm he was actually too close for me to get a dead on focus, but when I took the shot my frame went blurry. Oh no, I thought, I turned the focus ring the wrong way . . . (If you’re not a frequent to Lord Ashbury, then you should know that I’m a manual focus shooter.) Now, a split second is a split second, but you know in a split second if you’ve whiffed in panic. I knew that I hadn’t panicked in that split second, which then made me ask the next obvious question–what the hell happened? What happened was that Kanye decided that instead of being photographed getting into a car, he would slide around to the other side for more privacy. I didn’t focus the wrong way; he simply stepped through and past my minimum point of focus. By the time I realised what had happened, I basically belted out a laugh of disbelief. Kanye actually had to step around me so that he could get into his car.
