Last year, I was invited to out to the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic at the very last minute. I wasn’t prepared. New York was in the start of a preseason heatwave as the sun baked the ground. My shirt was thoroughly soaked after ten minutes and I wondered if I’d underestimated the notion of not putting on sunscreen. I didn’t make it off the pier. But this year, things started out a bit more promising. With some low-lying cloud coverage, the weather was just about perfect, at least through the start of the third period before the rains came in washed everyone out. Alas.
Veuve Clicquot’s seventh annual event kicks off summer with a sartorial bang the way the Kentucky Derby say Adieu to spring. Big hats, bright colours, and some excellent picnic baskets queue up for a train of ferries that shuttle event goers from downtown New York City out to Liberty Park, just across the water on the coast of New Jersey. Big bottles of Veuve Clicquot abound, of course, but the day wouldn’t be complete without some great polo. Featuring the return of Argentinian polo great, Ignacio Figueras (or Nacho, as he is affectionately called; he is also the face of the Ralph Lauren Black Label), the match itself was fast and furious with a flurry of goals to open the first half.
But of course, we’re here for the fashion! Here are some highlights from yesterday, though to be honest, I have plenty more good ones that I’m sure to post more of my throughout the week.
